Is Fiji Passports Being Sold as a Commodity?

Fiji resorts to issuing Certificates of Identity as they run out of passports. This is the third purchase of new passports in a year and indicates a serious lack of faith in our Fiji future. Immigration must be short of funds to fall behind on such a basic item as passports.

A TOTAL of 2500 new blank passports arrive in the country before the month end.

Director Immigration Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said he expected to receive the balance of 17,500 passports by March.

With the limited number of passports in stock, all applications received by the department will be treated on a case by case basis.

"Priority will be given to those who need to travel abroad for urgent medical treatment," he said.

Major Vuniwaqa said they would try to accommodate requests from citizens wanting to travel abroad while there were those who could use Certificates of Identity (CI).

But while all the countries in the region including Australia accept CI, New Zealand does not.

He said the US does not accept CI for security reasons.

"People travelling from the UK to Fiji can use the certificate but to travel from Fiji to the UK there are obstacles from some countries," he said

"For students in the new year, if we are unable to issue them with passports then they will be issued with Certificates of Identity (CI).

"Hopefully 17,500 blank passports will arrive by the end of March 2011.

"We understand the inconvenience members of the public are facing but at the same time we are trying our very best to deal with the issue at hand to the best of our abilities," he said.

  3. To those who has commented above... simply does not understand the role of this army.

Past controllers of passports were corrupt and issued more than one passport for an individual... and it serems that you have gained out of it as well to blame this army for strengthening the area.

Yes we were once warriors, and thats why many rooted us from all angles. Hopefully you will realise this

Unfortunately, role of army in Fiji seems to be planning & executing coups after coups for the last 20 years or so. Ever wonder why people are now thinking otherwise plus this shortage of Fiji passport??

  5. There is shortage of passport for so long. One would think that it will be resolved by now. I can not understand the agenda behind this. I know of new students who want to go overseas for studies but cannot do so because of no passports. They can not sit IELTS because you will need passport as for ID. It is a catch 22 situation. You just can not go forward in this country of corruption.

  6. Yes @Anon, my passport needs chsnging but kept being told they have run out! What does one expect from people that first of all did not get elected to rule the Nation? It is common knowledhe that there are people working hard in the engine room i.e USP, Khaiyum Aarsee Saiyed & his crooked lawyers fraternity, opportunists, etc etc. This is the first time ever Fiji has experienced this type of problem. What else do one expect ...Fiji is in shut-down mode..!! Isa ko Viti!!
