Young Commonwealth Competitions: 2010 Winners Announced

Good afternoon,

I am delighted to be able to announce the winners of the 2010 Young Commonwealth Competitions. The Royal Commonwealth Society has been running creative competitions for over one hundred years, but this marked the first year that our writing, film and photography competitions have been brought together into one exciting awards scheme.

We received thousands of entries from more than 50 countries around the world. Hugely impressed by the high standard of all the submissions, the RCS team and competition judges would like to extend their sincere thanks and congratulations to everyone who took part and supported the programme.

Our young winners range in age from 12 to 30 and come from Cameroon, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Trinidad & Tobago, Canada, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the UK. The attached document contains full details and you can see the winning films, photographs and essays at: www.thercs.org/youth/competitions

We are now working hard to raise enough sponsorship to fly a few of the winners to London in October 2010  for a week-long programme of activities. This will include workshops with professional writers, film-makers and photographers; a visit to an international newsroom; media interviews; entry to the Commonwealth Photographic Exhibition; a tour of Marlborough House (home of the Commonwealth Secretriat); and meetings with Commonwealth VIPs, including the Deputy Secretary General and High Commissioners.

Their week in London will culminate with the Commonwealth Gala Awards Ceremony on 14th October. At this dinner, prizes will be presented by Guest of Honour, award-winning film director, Gurinder Chadha. Commonwealth High Commissioners, representatives of the Delhi and Glasgow Commonwealth Games and other young winners will all be present. If you would like to find out more about the Gala Dinner and how to book, please click here.

The RCS is planning more exciting youth programmes and competitions for 2011. Please keep an eye on our website: www.thercs.org/youth If you have any questions at all in the meantime, please do not hesitate to email me at catherine.clark@thercs.org

Finally, many congratulations to all our winners and thank you for your interest in, and support for, the 2010 Young Commonwealth Competitions.

Best wishes,

Catherine
