Extra $3m flood relief aid to Fiji

Updated at 8:44am on 3 February 2009

The New Zealand Government is giving an extra $3 million for flood relief efforts in Fiji but says the money will not go through the country's interim government.

Last month New Zealand gave $675,000 to agencies in Fiji, including the Red Cross, to help with flood relief.

The cost of the damage caused by the floods in the Pacific nation is now estimated to be about $NZ85 million.

Prime Minister John Key said because of the political situation in Fiji the extra money will not go through the interim government, but will instead be distributed to a variety of non-governmental organisations and multilateral agencies.

Mr Key said the contribution is primarily for reconstruction of roads and infrastructure.

Red Cross disaster co-ordinator in Fiji, Vuli Gauna, said the payment will provide hygiene supplies to avoid disease.

Mr Gauna said the packs contain disinfectant, which it is hoped will prevent outbreaks of typhoid, leptospirosis and diarrhoea.

He said the funding will also help the community to be better prepared for disasters in the future.
